Life in Asia with Mainfreight

CiCi Wang has spent most of here life in New Zealand but when her husband started a new business in China, being part of the Mainfreight global team meant a new adventure closer to her family. As our business grows into new territories, team members like CiCi have more and more opportunities to live their life around the globe.

How did your career with Mainfreight get started and where?

I joined Chemcouriers Auckland (one of Mainfreight brands) as part-time administrator when I was studying at Massey University in 2007. When I graduated a year later, I was lucky enough to be offered a full time role on the Mainfreight graduate programme.

I worked with Chemcouriers, then moved into a customer services role at Mainfreight Air & Ocean.  After a year’s maternity leave I came back as part of the sales team.

How did you end up in China?

My husband started a new business in China in 2014, so I applied and was successful in transferring to Mainfreight Shanghai as a business development manager.

What have the opportunities meant to you personally and professionally?

It’s been great to build an understanding and knowledge of this business across different markets and cultures. I understand more about how the Mainfreight team thinks and works in different countries which makes me more valuable to the business and better at what I do. Personally, I’m grateful that, by being part of a global business, I can be with my family and with Mainfreight at the same time.

How has it been adapting to the Mainfreight culture in a different country?

As I was originally born in Shanghai, it’s been an advantage to have an understanding of the local culture. I spent more time understanding the way team work and think in China compared to New Zealand.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining Mainfreight?

Being with Mainfreight for over eight years, I feel it’s a company you can believe in and grow up with. Yes, you get to see the world, but you’re also part of a strong culture that supports one another. Be passionate, be hungry all the time and never lose sight of the Mainfreight culture.

Once you are here, you never want to leave!
